Maastricht Special Issue

During the last three decades our knowledge on the stratigraphy and palaeontology of the Maastrichtian Stage in its type area has increased considerably. Celebrations in 1999, with a travelling exhibit and a Special Issue published in 2003, clearly demonstrated that research into the Maastrichtian Stage is still very much alive and kicking. The discovery of several mosasaur specimens, bird and mammal fossils and interesting Cretaceous-Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary sections in the environs of Maastricht have contributed significantly to this.

For the year 2024, which sees the 175th anniversary of the type-Maastrichtian (having been introduced by Dumont in the summer of 1849), the plan is to have a workshop on all aspects of the Maastrichtian (ranging from palaeontology, geochemistry to palaeobiogeography), coupled with a special session devoted to its iconic marine lizard, the mosasaurs. At this event, we also aim to present a new NJG Special Issue dedicated to the research performed on the Maastrichtian over the past 25 years.
